Endodontics is a specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the internal tissues (pulp) of the tooth. The dental pulp consists of the tooth's nerves and blood vessels, and when damaged, it can lead to severe pain and infection. Endodontists aim to save the tooth, particularly without the need for extraction, by performing root canal treatment. During this procedure, the infected or necrotic pulp tissue inside the tooth is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and filled with biocompatible materials. Following the treatment, a crown may be placed on the tooth to preserve its functional integrity. Endodontic treatment is vital for preventing the spread of infection and protecting the health of surrounding tissues.
