What Causes Breath and How Can It Be Prevented?

Bad breath is a common condition that can affect a person’s confidence and social life. In most cases, it is caused by problems within the mouth. Bacteria accumulating on the tongue, poor oral hygiene, gum disease, tartar buildup, tooth decay, and dry mouth are among the most common causes. Smoking and the use of tobacco products, as well as certain foods and drinks, can also contribute to bad breath. Temporary bad breath in the morning or after long periods without eating may be normal, but persistent bad breath should be evaluated as it may indicate an oral or dental health problem.

To help prevent bad breath, teeth should be brushed properly at least twice a day, the spaces between the teeth should be cleaned with dental floss or suitable interdental cleaning aids, and the surface of the tongue should be cleaned regularly. Drinking enough water, avoiding tobacco products, and attending regular dental check-ups can also help. If bad breath persists, the underlying cause should be identified rather than simply masking the odor with mouthwash or other products. If no oral cause is found, further evaluation by an appropriate medical specialist may be recommended.
