What Is Teeth Whitening and How Is It Performed?

Teeth whitening is one of the aesthetic dental procedures performed to achieve a lighter tooth shade when the natural color of teeth has darkened or become discolored for various reasons. Tooth discoloration may result from several factors, including the consumption of staining substances such as tea, coffee, and tobacco, aging, inadequate oral hygiene, the use of certain medications, and structural changes occurring during tooth development. Unlike the removal of stains from tooth surfaces, teeth whitening procedures aim to eliminate or reduce discoloration within the internal structure of the tooth. Whitening agents containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are generally used for this purpose. Teeth whitening can be performed by a dentist in a clinical setting or at home using custom-made trays prepared by a dentist and appropriate whitening products. The choice of method depends on the current shade of the teeth, the cause of discoloration, the condition of oral and dental health, and the patient's expectations.

To ensure that teeth whitening is carried out safely and effectively, it is important to first undergo a comprehensive oral and dental examination by a dentist. Existing cavities, gum diseases, and other oral health problems should be evaluated before the procedure. In suitable patients, teeth whitening performed with appropriate products and techniques can help improve the aesthetic appearance of the teeth. However, temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation may occur during or after the procedure. It should also be remembered that whitening does not change the color of fillings, crowns, or similar restorations. To maintain the shade achieved after whitening, patients are advised to continue regular oral hygiene practices, be mindful of their consumption of staining foods and beverages, and attend regular dental check-ups. Since unsupervised use of whitening methods may pose risks to oral and dental health, teeth whitening should always be carried out following a dentist's assessment and recommendations.
