What Is Gum Recession and How Can It Be Treated?
Gum recession is a condition in which the gum tissue surrounding the teeth gradually moves away from the tooth surface, making the roots of the teeth more visible. This can make the teeth appear longer, cause sensitivity to hot and cold, and sometimes lead to aesthetic concerns. Gum recession may develop for several reasons, including brushing too hard or using an incorrect brushing technique, gum disease, tartar buildup, smoking, the position of the teeth, and certain anatomical factors. Detecting gum recession at an early stage is important to help prevent further progression and to maintain healthy teeth for many years.
Treatment is planned individually according to the cause and severity of gum recession. The first step is to learn the correct brushing technique, maintain proper oral hygiene, and treat any existing gum disease. In mild cases, regular follow-up and preventive care may be sufficient. In more advanced cases, surgical procedures may be needed to cover the exposed root surface or strengthen the gum tissue. To help prevent gum recession, it is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoid applying excessive pressure while brushing, clean between the teeth regularly, and attend routine dental check-ups. If gum recession is noticed, consulting a dentist at an early stage can help prevent more serious problems.
